About Rural.ie

Ireland's honest, practical resource for rural living.

Our Mission

Rural.ie exists because there is no single honest, practical resource for rural Ireland.

If you're thinking about moving to the countryside, buying rural property, starting a business, or just understanding what life is actually like outside the cities, you're left piecing together information from government websites, tourist guides, property portals, and word-of-mouth. None of it tells you the full picture.

We built Rural.ie to fix that. We write plainly, we explain the systems that actually exist (not the ones that should exist), and we update regularly as circumstances change. We don't write for tourists. We write for people actually trying to live and work in rural Ireland.

What We Cover

Rural.ie is built around seven core pillars:

  • Moving Rural: Practical guides to relocating from cities to the countryside. Schools, childcare, services, community, lifestyle expectations.
  • Broadband: The reality of internet access in rural areas. Speed tests, provider comparison, Government funding, satellite options.
  • Grants: Agricultural grants, rural business grants, renovation grants, energy grants. Who qualifies, how to apply, deadlines.
  • Property: Buying and selling rural property. Septic tanks, wells, planning, title issues, surveys, legal processes. Everything the estate agent won't mention.
  • Things To Do: Activities, events, and genuine rural experiences. GAA, agricultural shows, farmers markets, traditional music, seasonal activities.
  • Blog: Deep dives on specific topics, seasonal guides, case studies, updates on policy changes.
  • County Guides (coming): Detailed information for each county—infrastructure, services, community, cost of living, what makes each place distinctive.

Our Approach

We follow four principles:

  • Accuracy: We check facts. We talk to experts. We update information when things change. If something is wrong, we fix it.
  • Plain language: No government jargon. No buzzwords. We explain things as they are, not as they sound official.
  • Practical focus: We care about what matters to people actually living and working in rural Ireland. Not theory. Practicum.
  • Regular updates: Rural Ireland changes. Broadband expands. Grant schemes update. Septic tank standards evolve. We keep up.
